Six Degrees of Separation is a monthly meme hosted by Kate @ Books Are My Favourite and Best. The idea is to start with the book that Kate gives us and then create a chain of six books, each suggested by the one before…

Six Degrees of Separation

This month Kate’s starter book is The Separation by Stephanie Bishop. It’s a book about a J B Blackwood a writer who’s about to win a literary prize, but beforehand goes on a cruise with her husband who gets washed over board in a storm.

I’ve not read this book, or even heard of it before today, but when I saw it was about someone being washed overboard it instantly reminded me of Distress Signals by Catherine Ryan Howard which I thoroughly enjoyed when I was first book blogging back in 2016!

Another book set on a cruise ship that I recently enjoyed was Passage from Nuala by Harriet Steel. It’s book 6 in the cosy mystery series set in 1930s Ceylon (Sri Lanka) featuring Inspector Shanti de Silva.

Jamrach’s Menagerie by Carol Birch is another book set at sea. Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy this as it was a brutal story based on fact. According to my review on Goodreads “I liked the the first and last parts of this book set in London, but I didn’t enjoy the part set at sea. Its a very grim story that is written very well but is hard going at times. Parts of it are based on fact which makes it even grimmer.” :/

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson is one of the most famous books about life on the ocean waves. I listened to a dramatised version at the end of last year and loved every minute of it particularly because Tom Baker was playing Long John Silver!

A nonfiction book about the sea that I enjoyed was Salt on Your Tongue by Charlotte Runcie. It’s a book that “explores what the sea means to us, and particularly what it has meant to women through the ages”

And my final book with a connection to the sea is The Sea Sisters Swimming Club by Sue McDonagh a wonderful summery romance set in sunny Wales, of all places!

Starting with The Separation by Stephanie Bishop and ending with The Sea Sisters Swimming Club by Sue McDonagh via other books with a connection to the sea hope you enjoyed the trip?!
