My Review

This was such a lovely gentle read, which brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my face on more than one occasion. I don’t normally go for books that are slow paced, but this was a perfect read for me, as it felt like real lives, rather than an overly dramatic ‘Hollywood’ type story.

I really liked Fran and Catriona, the main characters, and loved reading about the different lives they led in both Alexandria and Scotland during World War Two and how their lives eventually became interlinked. I admired the way they both coped with the uncertainly of war and how they kept going, not giving in to the fear and terror.

I’ve read quite a few books set in this time period, but this is the first book I’ve read that featured the war in North Africa. I found it fascinating, reading about the different battles and their outcomes. I also didn’t know much about the differences between the cultural groups in Alexandria and how shaky the political atmosphere was for the colonialists. The Scottish setting was equally fascinating, as I didn’t realise that there had been so much army activity there during the War.

I thoroughly recommend this book if you enjoy historical fiction, particularly set during World War Two.
